How to split PDF documents into single pages on a Mac, it's so easy!

Have you ever wished you could just save one or two pages from that multiple paged document? There must be an easy way. Well there is. I Googled it, and found a very simple solution for Mac users.

locate the document in its folder, or on the desktop
right click document and open with PREVIEW
a dialog box opens and little pages appear in pane on the right
select the page you want and drag it to the desktop
save that page and give it a name

There you go, it's just that easy.

Jacarandas flowering in upcountry Maui means springtime

Every year I am blown away by the beautiful colors of the flowering Jacaranda trees upcountry, and mostly in Kula. The purple flowers really stand out against the backdrop of the blue or gray skies, but it's not so easy to capture a good photo. I love the effect of the spilled petals on the ground making a purple carpet.

I took a drive out the Kula Highway to Keokea and Ulupalakua just to admire the trees. What a great day it was, and so worth it.

Also of note at this time of year are the baby peaches. Who would think peaches could grow on Maui? These one were found at the Sun Yat Sen park in Ulupalakua where there are a few trees which were probably planted by some Chinese person.

One of the costs of closing is Title Insurance, why do I need it?

Title Insurance protects you from someone claiming ownership of your home once it closes.

Can you imagine living and enjoying your new home and then one day, someone comes calling that the house you call home is rightfully theirs? Title Insurance gives you peace of mind against that.

Here are some reasons why you want Title Insurance:

A deed or mortgage in the chain of title may be a forgery.

Claims constantly arise due to marital status and validity of divorces.

A deed or mortgage may have been made by an incompetent or under aged person.

A deed or mortgage made under an expired power of attorney may be void.

A deed or mortgage may have been made by a person with the same name as the owner.

A child born after the execution of a will may have interest in the property.

Title transferred by an heir may be subject to a federal estate tax lien.

An heir or other person presumed dead may appear and recover the property or an interest.

A judgment regarding the title may be voidable because of some defect in the proceeding.

By insuring the title, you can eliminate delays when passing your title on to someone else.

Many lawyers protect their clients as well as themselves by procuring title insurance.

A deed or mortgage may have been procured by fraud or duress.

And best of all.....a title policy is paid in full by the first premium for as long as you own the property.

The bottom line is....one just needs Title Insurance.

Thankful for Keanae Maui taro growers who bring us Ono Poi!

Saw this truck parked at the blowhole in Keanae the other day. Gotta love that custom license plate. The sacks were filled with taro roots.

For those who don't know, poi is the well-loved foodstuff that's made from the taro root. Taro grows in the paddies in Keanae and Wailua on Maui. Poi is a favorite food item for Hawaiians and you'll find it in the local grocery stores.

Hawaiian words you might encounter - Hale and Hala

Took a drive around East Maui with some visitors and stopped in at the Seven Pools (NOT Seven Sacred Pools by the way). It was the most beautiful day with no rain at all. Anyway, this is just a couple of quick pictures to show a couple of the sights at the park, which is part of Haleakala National Park.

HALE - is Hawaiian for a building, home or house. Pronounced like HA-LAY

In fact the word HALE can be found as a part of larger words such as HALEAKALA which means house of the sun!

HALA - is a type of tree that's common in the wetter parts of Hawaii. Pronounced like HA-LA

Hala was a very important plant to the Hawaiians. The Hala, or screwpine, is of the Pandanus genus and can be found in most tropical Pacific islands.

You might see these trees and think they are bearing pineapples, but that's not the case. They have a big seed cluster that sort of resembles a pineapple. The wood was used for building materials.

The leaves of the tree are called lauhala and were used for weaving mats and baskets. Sails of the Hawaiian sailing canoes were crafted of lauhala.

I found a great website that explains how to prepare these leaves for weaving.

Beautiful sculptures crafted from unwanted trees in Ulupalakua Maui

What would you do with some unwanted trees in your yard? Would you just cut them down? Or would you create something from them?

These carvings were made from some eucalyptus trees at the Tedeschi Winery in Ulupalakua Maui, in the upcountry region. Isn't this a creative way of making the best of a bad situation?
